The Interplay of asthma and chronic cough

A recent study conducted by researchers from NOVA Medical School and other institutions has highlighted the prevalence of chronic cough, affecting 9.4% of individuals in a large Lisbon health center network. The online survey, part of the EPICOUGH study, surveyed over 7,000 participants and found that chronic cough was notably prevalent among those with asthma (14.0%) compared to non-asthmatics (8.5%). Key risk factors for chronic cough identified include asthma and advancing age. The study also noted that while asthma significantly increases the likelihood of chronic cough, other underlying causes should be considered in diagnosis. This research underscores the importance of thorough evaluation for chronic cough, particularly in asthmatic patients.
